FINAL ANIMATION

new storyboard

I made a quick storyboard to show some key frames of my animation. Throughout my animation everything will be moving in time to the music.

idea

After looking at videos like this one:

I decided that I liked the idea and wanted to try and recreate my own kind of version, something that will 'dance' to the music.

testing with software

I decided to purchase the 'i can animate' app to get the hang of stop motion as I've never done it before. This app was really easy to use, the only disadvantage being you can't add music to it. If this hadn't of been a big issue I'd have definitely used it for my final animation.

Here's my tester 2 second video that I thought related to the three words that I chose for my song:

Changes

After presenting my storyboard and getting feedback I realised that my idea didn't really go with the music and I had to come up with a different and more abstract idea to go along with the three words that I chose for my song.

I youtubed some more abstract videos such as this one:

I liked how it all moved in time to the music and thought my song would be perfect to try and do something like this to.

three words

After listening to my song a couple of more times I decided on three words that I thought summed up the song:

  • power
  • electricity
  • static
These words gave me another idea. My animation could be the 'development of electricity'. Showing all the different ways that electricity works, such as a circuit or the work of Nikola Tesla and the coil that he discovered. Since my music for my animation reminds me of an electric current I thought it'd be a good way to display it. I have also chose a different section for my animation, 2.50 to 3.20 seconds.

"Animation is not the art of drawings that move but the art of movements that are drawn."

After reading this quote I really want to make sure the patterns and objects in my animation move to the music in my animation. Since it's quite techno and electronic it may be quite hard but I think it'll be effective.

animation research

I decided I needed to research some animation videos and decide which style to take on. Although I really like the first two I wouldn't know how to create that so I decided to go with something similar to the last one. However the beginning will hopefully start like the first two.

ANIMATION

For this brief I was given a song called gantz graf by Autechre. After listening to this piece at first I was slightly overwhelmed as I had no idea at all what I could do for the animation but then I started to come up with a few ideas:

  • some kind of 'trip'
  • car transformation
  • junkyard
  • fruit blending
  • musical notes
  • patterns moving
  • racing
  • car being made
  • inside of a tree, mechanical
  • a room being rearranged
I think I should go with bright warm colours to give the animation a warm effect, which is quite in contrast to the music itself.

I have chosen to go with the timing 1.30 to 2.00 seconds, 30 seconds long.

I have also chosen to to go with a can transformation, which will turn into different objects after a woman has put the can down.

zine research

I decided to look at some zines for inspiration for mine. I really like these examples that I found online, as well as the ones we were shown in the workshop.

final packaging

After a while being stuck on what to do for my packaging, I came up with this design which i decided to use for my final packaging. I really like the shape it makes when its all together, and each side could be something different about me as a designer.

laser cutting workshop

We had a workshop on laser cutting, and it was surprisingly good! I wasn't keen on how it sometimes burnt the edges of the card, but i loved that you could engrave something onto your card.

I will definitely be using this in future projects, however I don't think I needed to use it for my net on this project.

nets

I started by renting some books out in the library and looking at different nets. I really liked this one as the shape was interesting when it came together. I tried to make it several times however it just wasn't working for me. So I decided to go with something a bit more simple.

I drew a dodecahedron up and did the outline on illustrator and decided it was a good solid shape to use for my packaging.

LOGO

Above, were my initial logo ideas. I liked a few of them and tried to develop them but didn't feel any of them were really working for me. I wanted something simple that stood out yet looked quite professional at the same time. After asking opinions from my flatmates I decided on this one that I made on illustrator. I think the grey gives it a smart look without being too in your face.

More packaging research

I found that I'm really stuck on where to begin with my packaging. What colours? What net? What four things about myself? So I decided to do some more research on behance.com and found some that really helped.

Richard Sweeney (research)

After our first workshop on scoring and folding paper to create different shapes I thought I'd look into different designers work as how they folded paper to make such delicate shapes really surprised me. I came across a man called Richard Sweeney, and his technique of paper engineering is fascinating. These are a few examples of his work.

Workshop 1 (paper folding and scoring)

To start off our brief, our first workshop introduced us to paper folding and scoring to create unique shapes out of a simple piece of paper. My favourite one was the 'snake' shape that could also look like and 8 or a &!

We then had to make some logo's look 3D so I chose the subway 'S'.

I made the S longer on each side to make it stand up a bit from the table, however with a bit more work I think I could make it look even better.

Curated By Narratives

I really enjoyed the Curated By Event, despite not being able to stay for Erik Kessels it was a good experience.

It started off with Morag Myerscough. I particularly enjoyed her typographic work and she said, "design for you, not for for other people" which really made me think about me and my style of work. Next came Jack Schulze which I was completely inspired by. I'm not normally keen on technical products but his work is definitely worth checking it out! His talk was probably my favourite out of the three that I saw. Next on was Johnny Kelly. Safe to say his talk was controversial but very interesting and I'm really glad I stayed and watched his talk.

I think this product from Berg (Jack Schulze) was my favourite thing I saw at the event. It's a completely new idea and I'd love to get my hands on one of these. (Disappointed I won't at the ridiculous price tag!)

Beginning packaging research

We got given a recent brief on which we were told we had to create our own identity with packages and logos. After our first workshop in creating different shapes out of paper with scoring and such I decided I would start my research off by looking at some very clever yet simple packaging.

I came across these different packages. I think the first one is a very intelligent way of advertising the risk of smoking. These days we see horrible pictures of the effects of smoking on the front of packets, and I can't argue that they aren't effective, but I do think people react in different ways to different types of packaging. So I think this coffin shape is a clever way to still let people know of the risk, yet its not in their face.

The second image I love as it doesn't have a large amount of branding yet people know what it is as it represents a bee. It looks simplistic and elegant in the kitchen, as I believe that sometimes over branding items can make a kitchen look cluttered.
